Ex-machina: An exhibition «in progress» at the Rooftile and Brickworks Museum
|
|
2009-11-20: On Friday, November 20 at 8pm the opening of the contemporary art exhibition titled Ex-machina will be held at the Rooftile and Brickworks Museum N. & S. Tsalapatas in Volos. Organized by the Piraeus Bank Cultural Foundation, the exhibition will run through to January 27, 2010. (Ôhe exhibition has been extended until 2010-02-28).
The ex-industrial site, now a museum, once again ‘comes alive’ through contemporary art. Under the curatorship of art historian Katerina Tselou, artists Eleni Kotsoni and Maro Michalakakou propose a series of sculpted and sonorous installations in the fascinating area of the old factory. The two artists give this space a new dimension by relating the original, poetic work-video of Swiss artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss, The way things go, to elements of this worksite, its previous use and its history. Through these in situ installations, different concepts are developed, such as mechanical motion, chain production, matter and form, the transition from one state to another and the relation between man and machine.
Visitors who find themselves in the Museum during the week preceding the exhibition's opening will have the opportunity to watch the two artists' work «in the making», as well as the educational programmes with school groups also participating in the works' creation.
In parallel, and in collaboration with the School of Architecture of the University of Thessaly, a workshop with the students will be held. The students will work in the museum's premises together with the artists and will present their own proposals. The action will have an evolutionary character, which will be completed with the presentation of the students' creations at the exhibition's close.
