«Adopting a fountain», an educational programme at the Museum of Marble Crafts

2010-07-01: On the occasion of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, on April 16-18 the Department of Museums of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation, in collaboration with museologist/educator Nancy Selenti, successfully carried out an educational programme in Tinos called "Adopting a fountain". Focusing on selected marble fountains of the 18th and 19th century, the programme's aim was to familiarize schoolchildren with the island's monuments and raise their awareness of the need to protect and integrate them into contemporary social, cultural and economic life. Targeted essentially at the lower secondary school level, the programme took place over two days and was free of charge.

The first day included a visit to the Museum of Marble Crafts and a preparatory ninety-minute session with each group. Through a PowerPoint presentation, the children discovered various monuments in Greece and abroad and approached the concept itself of "monument" (mobile/ immobile, natural/manmade). They then focused on monuments in Tinos, especially marble ones, and followed the stages of quarrying and working marble before apprehending, by means of an observation game, the extemporal nature of marble technology. They explored the Museum's marble exhibits so as to discover those directly related to water, took note of their shape and ornamentation and placed them in their historical context. After discussing their function and role in the island's past social life, they concluded that these monuments continue to be important in modern society and as such should be studied, protected and promoted. They therefore outlined their action/field research for the following day, also lasting ninety minutes per group.

During the second day, after marking their location on a map and noting their position to natural springs, the groups of schoolchildren visited selected fountains in Chora (Apano Vrysi, Kato Vrysi, fountains around the church of the Virgin Mary) and Pyrgos (the well in Platanos, washing troughs). They then observed their shape and ornamentation and compared them to the ones in the Museum. After sketching and photographing them, they wrote down the information they were offered on them, which they completed by interviewing people living in their vicinity, and made a brief but concise presentation on the spot. The accompanying teachers were given additional material so that, at a later date, each group might complete its presentation in class and draft a leaflet or design a poster that helps valorise each monument among both the island's inhabitants and its visitors.
