In this book, author Kostas Adamakis focuses on the architectural industrial heritage of Volos, which took shape between the mid-19th century and up to the 1960s and 1970s. Over this period of time, an important number of factories was founded and operated as part of the town’s urban tissue. The book analyzes the historical framework of this industrialization in the wider Balkan region and in Greece, with particular emphasis on Thessaly and in particular on the region of Pelion and on Volos. The long-term research process combined fieldwork, an inventory and the architectural documentation of numerous buildings of Volos’ industrial zone, in parallel with unearthing data on them in archival collections. The volume covers 53 industrial complexes, providing for each one its historical facts, architectural documentation, new uses –in the cases where this has arisen– together with rich photographic material and architectural plans.
