Educational programme «Let's weave!» @ the Silk Museum, in Soufli (Monday, May 17, 2010)

2010-06-02: On Monday, 17.5.10 (9:00-13:00), in the context of the International Museum Day celebration (IMD), the educational programme «Let's weave!» was held at the Silk Museum, in Soufli (Thrace), with great success.
Lasting approximately 1h15´, the programme's objective was to offer an experiential approach to technical culture processes and encourage the coexistence of different age groups in the Museum, as this year's theme for the IMD celebration was «Museums for Social Harmony». The programme was targeted at groups of schoolchildren attending the last three classes of Primary School and included a brief (Power Point) presentation of weaving through the ages, touching and then examining different types of natural yarn through a microscope, spinning koukoulariko thread (i.e. from damaged cocoons) with a spindle, making a woven piece of textile on a weaving frame and a weaving demonstration on the Museum's loom by a craftswoman of Soufli. An assessment was carried out at the end of the programme using questionnaires (for the children and the teaching staff).

An adapted version of the programme was proposed for children attending Nursery School: the assembly of a large-scale puzzle picturing a woman of Soufli was the starting point of a discussion held with the children on local costume as a product of weaving. Following this, the children had the opportunity to observe the exhibits of the showcases featuring local dress and, finally, to create a costume of their own inspiration using a mixed technique (drawing and collage with fabrics and coloured paper).
The programme was attended by a total of 146 schoolchildren from the region (1st Primary School of Soufli, 2nd Primary School of Soufli, 1st Primary School of Amorio Didymoteichou, 1st Nursery School of Soufli).
