"Myriads water voices” @ the Open-air Water Power Museum and @ the Environment Museum of Stymphalia

2010-10-07: The Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation will be celebrating the «Environment and Culture 2010» campaign, organized for the third consecutive year by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in the two museums of the Peloponnese that were created around the element of water. The campaign, which over the two-year period 2010-11 has the title of «Myriads of water voices», aims to draw people's attention to the significance and the multifaceted value of water in man's life, from ancient times through to the present.

From October 7 through to October 10, the public will have the possibility of acquainting itself with targeted museum pieces relating to the them eof water in the Open-Air Water-Power Museum in Dimitsana and in the Museum of the Environment in Stymphalia, while special educational and entertainment activities will be held for school groups, as well as for the general public.

More specifically, at the Open-Air Water-Power Museum in Dimitsana, the water-powered installations of the watermill and fulling mill, housed on the same premises, will be presented to the public, while over the two-day period October 8-9 a specially organized activity called «A day at the mill» will be held with the visitors' participation. During this activity, which will be repeated on the aforementioned dates between 10am and 2pm, the participants will be able to grind corn at the Museum's watermill, knead and bake the famous traditional «embroidered» loaves of bread with the help of women from Arcadia and, finally, taste traditional delicacies of the region, such as the local pancakes (tiganites). On Friday, October 8, the activity is reserved to school groups of primary education, while on Saturday, October 9, the event is open to the general public.

At the Museum of the Environment in Stymphalia, which opened its doors to the public in June 2010, special museum pieces/models will be presented, which highlight the determining role of water in shaping the region's environment. Water influences a region's geomorphology, provides resources and allows the development of human activities. In parallel, an educational programme for primary school pupils titled «The labours of water » will be held in collaboration with the theatrical group Okypous. Using as its starting point the mythological presence of lake Sstymphalia in the labours of Hercules and through a playful and at times dramatized journey through its premises, young visitors will become acquainted with the new museum and be made aware of environmental issues. The programme will take place on Friday, October 8 from 10:30 to 12:30 and from 13:00 to 15:00.

During the festivities linked to the «Environment and Culture 2010: Myriads of water voices » campaign on October 7, 8, 9 & 10, entrance to the Open-Air Water-Power Museum in Dimitsana and the Museum of the Environment in Stymphalia and participation in the events being organized will be free of cost for the public. School groups wishing to participate in the activities are kindly requested to communicate beforehand either with the organizers, or directly with the Museum of their choice.
