The Lyceum Club of Greek Women 100 years
Stymphalia project - man+environment Athens 2012, 68 p., 41 ill. ISBN 978-960-244-157-2 (non commercial edition) The book is the catalogue of the contemporary art exhibition titled «Stymphalia project - man and the environment», which was organized in the spring of 2012 at the Museum of the Environment of Stymphalia. Through the professors’ texts, the short commentaries of the students-artists about their works and the corresponding photographs from the exhibition, the catalogue conveys the idea of the artist’s approach of the surrounding environment of Stymphalia, the inspiration born of it and the artistic creation that was finally completed. The publication of the catalogue, which is not for sale, was undertaken with a view to offering all the copies to the Athens School of Fine Arts for educational and academic use, as the product of the fertile collaboration between the Cultural Foundation and the ASFA, as well as a gesture of PIOP’s effective support of the Fine Arts university institution.

The Lyceum Club of Greek Women 100 years
Scientific editor: Efi Avdela
Athens 2010, 511 p., 296 ill.
ISBN 978-960-244-147-3
€ 82.00
This collective volume, which commemorates the centenary of the Lyceum Club of Greek Women, the first organized women’s association in Greece with an uninterrupted presence in the social and cultural life of Athens and of the provincial towns where annexes were established, constitutes a detailed and penetrating presentation of the Lyceum Club’s historical itinerary. The 15 studies composing the book cover all the chronological phases of the Lyceum Club’s action, with a particular emphasis on its work and ideological orientations of the first decades, when the main axes of its action concerned the promotion of women’s issues and the respect and preservation of traditional forms of expression. The contribution is thus highlighted of the Lyceum Club’s founder, Callirhoe Parren, and of her successor, Anna Triantafyllidou, two strong personalities who determined the course of this women’s association and defined -each from her own ideological position- its manner of operating. The studies cover a variety of subjects: the Lyceum Club’s history, its ideological positions in the context of the international women’s movement, the constitution of the Vestiary, the promotion of Greek folk dances, the organization of the First National Women’s Conference in 1921, the assimilation of the concept of motherhood, the training and pedagogical procedures it adopted. The volume is further enriched with the inclusion of a chronological table, biographical notes on the Lyceum Club’s Chairpersons and the plentiful archival and photographic material.

Conservation, restoration and rehabilitation of monuments in Greece 1950-2000
Editors: Haralambos Bouras, Panayotis Tournikiotis Athens 2010, 348 p., 315 ill./drawings ISBN 978-960-244-146-6 € 65.00 This collective work comprises 16 studies by renowned architects and archaeologists, who have played an important role in the rehabilitation works of classified Ancient, Byzantine and Modern architectural monuments. The initiation of systematic efforts to preserve Greece’s monumental heritage dates back to the second half of the 20th century, without this meaning, of course, the subsequent adoption and especially application of a decisive State policy. These architectural monuments are approached as cultural goods and their rehabilitation is undertaken in relation both to the surrounding built-up area and the natural landscape they belong to and which makes them stand out as special historical elements of the country’s architectural heritage. The themes treated in this volume comprise, among others, the ideological and theoretical approaches in the restoration processes, the chronicle of rehabilitations and the degree of their social acceptance, as well as studies on the conservation and showcasing of Prehistoric, Classical, Byzantine and Modern monuments or monumental complexes. Lastly, the book includes subjects relating to traditional buildings and to those belonging to the Classicist current, as well as to Greek experiences of monument management.

Ephemeral and eternal Athens
Dimitris Filippidis Athens 2009, 276 p., 682 ill. ISBN 978-960-244-122-0 € 65
Professor emeritus of the National Technical University of Athens, author-architect Dimitris Filippidis casts a penetrating gaze on the external image and inner reality of the most metropolitan of Greek cities, Athens. The archival and photographic material of the 19th and 20th centuries, official or personal, published but also hitherto unpublished, outlines the city's evolution and gradual transformation. Furthermore, the author's personal photographs reveal his own viewpoint and compose a kaleidoscope of images and instants of everyday Athenian life, portrayed not as unbearable or inhospitable, but rather as a vibrant field of human cohabitation and positive interactions. Thus, while Athens in the 19th century functions and grows as a town of moderate dimensions, whose characteristics are its sense of proportion and its small, inhabitant-friendly scale, gradually, and especially during the second half of the 20th century, the elements of rapid change and temporary constructions compose a cascade of images and spatial transformation. Henceforth, a constant mutation of the Athenian landscape becomes the dominant factor, with diverse architectural trends, which sometimes are expressed through mass, uniform solutions and at other times bring forth the particular aesthetics of private or public buildings, classical, modern or even traditional. Finally, the almighty human factor often opts in favour of the necessary and the easy-to-use, without necessarily including a sense of proportion, of beauty or of architectural continuity.

Architectural Counterpoints from Zachos to the Present
Aristotelis Zachos’ Photo Archive Exhibition: Epirus, Thessaly, Macedonia. Benaki Museum Neohellenic Architecture Archives
Design and Research: Yannis Kizis
Athens 2008, 148 pages, 201 illustrations & plans (Greek/English bilingual edition)
ISBN 978-960-244-120-6
€ 24,00
The catalogue of this exhibition of photographic material from the archives of Aristotelis Zachos, belonging to the Neohellenic Architecture Archives of the Benaki Museum, presents monuments from the regions of Epirus, Thessaly and Macedonia photographed by this singular architect during the first two decades of the 20th century. It is structured around secondary modules with different photographic themes, such as water, public squares and markets, urban or rural dwellings, Christian and Muslim monuments, the Schwartz mansion, and also contains a brief presentation of the life and architectural work of Zachos. The exhibition’s curator, Yannis Kizis, accompanies and counterbalances the exhibited archival material with contemporary photographs of the depicted landscapes, thus recording the evolution of the urban and rural space as well as the monuments’ present state. The parallelism between the traditional and the recently remodelled space, which often evolved erratically, brings to the fore the landscape's cultural continuities and discontinuities.
