Mingei

Mingei

Mingei is a research programme funded by the E.C. aimed at recording, highlighting and ultimately protecting the applied arts and techniques. These techniques, as a form of material and intangible cultural heritage, include both artifacts, materials and tools, as well as their know-how and specialized use, the traditions and identity of the local societies to which they belong or are practiced. These techniques are part of local history and still have an impact on the economy of the regions in which they are blooming.

As case studies for recording and creating an example for the recording methodology, the programme will focus on:

- Glassware
- Silk weaving
- Chios mastic cultivation

The project also aims to:

- create a digital platform that will support museum professionals in the learning of skills, digitization of applied arts and techniques, while serving as a research tool for their study and preservation
- create narrative presentations of arts and techniques
- assist towards the regeneration of these techniques and their products aiming even at commercial exploitation
- develop innovative applications in the fields of education, tourism and the cultural and creative industries
- Support local communities associated with these techniques, aiming at stimulating tourist traffic as well as improving the experience of visitors to local museums.
