This work addresses the transition in the Greek mercantile fleet from sailing ships to steamships. Greek shipping’s adaptation to standards set by developments in Western European technology with the application of steam, aided the competitiveness of the Greek flag, leading to the formation of a class of Greek ship-owners and the accumulation of shipping capital.
