The Piraeus Cultural Foundation, the 18th Photometria International Photography Festival and the Benaki Museum organise the photo exhibition titled "The rough essence of things | Ellie Papadimitriou", starting from Saturday 26 September 2026, in the Silversmithing Museum, in Ioannina.
The exhibition presents photographs taken by Ellie Papadimitriou in Epirus and Macedonia from 1928 to 1931. As a member of the Refugee Settlement Commission and collaborator of the Centre for Asia Minor Studies, with her Kodak camera she followed the displaced people and the local population. While searching for a language in which to express herself, what she witnessed first-hand formed the basis of a new understanding of her country.
Through her lens, she created a primer for both old and modern Greece. Refraining from any folkloric quaintness, she captured rural and pastoral Greece maintaining a critical distance, given that she was an agronomy scientist.
In the spirit of dissent and rebellion, rejecting fake exoticism, she chose to dissect rather than to admire as a mere lover of nature. Through the lens of ethnology, she sought to "properly highlight the rough essence of things".
