Details

On the occasion of this year’s European Heritage Days (EHD), on the theme of “Architectural Heritage: Windows to the Past, Doors to the Future”, the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation presents the temporary exhibition titled “SPOLIA | 22+1 Transcripts” in the Silversmithing Museum in Ioannina.

The exhibition features 22 multi-layered squeeze papers created by Nora Okka, architect and visual artist. Following a special technical treatment, they "transcribe" onto absorbent white paper marble architectural elements and reliefs dating from the ancient Greek to the Byzantine era, which were used in the construction of the Old Cathedral of Athens (11th or 12th century), also known as the Little Metropolis. Located next to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, the Little Metropolis is a unique example of this architectural practice, namely the incorporation and reuse of older structural elements and members, known as "spolia," in newer constructions. The visual ensemble presented in the exhibition transfers to the monument of Its Kale only a few slabs and highlights the negative of the relief surfaces on a real scale. Their three-dimensional character reveals their invisible origins, in reference to historical memory and the human need to search for identity. Five lithographs which are also presented in the exhibition and belong to a private collection depict details from the facades of the Little Metropolis in Athens during the second half of the 19th century.

The exhibition also features a new artwork by Nora Okka, which is presented for the very first time and is directly related to the theme of the Silversmithing Museum. It is a diptych made up of a carved ceiling decoration, from a house in the Kastro neighbourhood of Ioannina, and its silver cast. The wooden part denotes its fragility, while the silver sheet over the relief symbolizes memory. Its title is its geographical coordinates, 39.67055° N, 2085909° E, and the artist explains that this reference emphasises the importance of historical memory and our need to belong to a place.

Duration of the exhibition: 26 September 2025 to 30 March 2026
