THE EXTINGUISHED CANDELABRUM. Images for a World Awaiting - Temporary exhibition in the Silversmithing Museum
10.3.2023
11.9.2023

The Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP) presents the temporary exhibition “THE EXTINGUISHED CANDELABRUM − Images of a World Awaiting” by Iro Nikopoulou, starting from Friday 10 March, in the Silversmithing Museum in Ioannina. The artist organizes her work in three units replete with symbolism and, through comparisons and juxtapositions, she explores the 200 years of the history of modern Greece.

In the first unit, the wrought iron candelabrum with the extinguished candles and the wooden “Altar”, like a magnified liturgical church triptych with historical figures, the related historical events and the related symbols, attempt to record the changes that have taken place in Greece during the last two hundred years, nationally as well as internationally.

The second unit, titled “Postmodern Hellas 2021”, presents three digital compositions on canvas, variations of the building of the Old Parliament as a theme, a historically charged landmark of Athens, also commenting on the continuous significations of historical narratives in modern Greece.

In the third unit, twelve paintings of digital composite portraits on canvas, based on artworks by creators of the time, each complemented by a guiding work of Iro Nikopoulou, create digital palimpsests that compose the “biographies” of significant figures of the Greek Revolution who set the tone and inspired the ethos of Greeks who revolted during that critical transition from enslavement to liberty in the early 19th century.

Duration of the exhibition: 10 March to 11 September 2023
Operating hours: Daily, except Tuesday, 10:00-18:00
Closed: Good Friday (until 12:00), Easter Sunday, 1 May, 15 August
