The exhibition is extented until March, 11 2024

The Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP) and the Civic Non-Profit Association "Field for art and culture" present, starting from Monday 9 October 2023, the temporary exhibition "Sarca II" by Thaleia Kerouli in the Open-Air Water Power Museum in Dimitsana.

With reference to the restored workshops and the pre-mechanical processes of tanning, as presented in the Museum, Keroulis' paper sculptures, which directly refer to flesh, carcasses and skins, are in direct dialogue with the permanent exhibition. The works, from the artist's work in progress, titled "Sarca" (2020-), harmoniously integrated into spaces in the Museum, highlight key issues such as the fragility of human nature, resilience and care. At the same time, they reflect the inextricable relationship between matter and spirit and the importance of physical and mental health versus decay.

Stratis Pantazis, art historian and curator of the exhibition, notes: Keroulis works on old used papers with various materials such as varnishes, glues and powders, creating a film, a "patina", to make the papers durable over time. The process that follows has much in common with that traditionally followed by tanners, such as softening, cleaning, tanning, stretching, oiling, "skefisma" [flattening], dyeing and polishing the leathers. The artist's practice is strenuous on both a physical and mental level. It could also be described as contradictory, as it synthesizes "flesh" in decomposition. It is an outlet, the imprint of intense emotions, which are recorded, embodied in our skin.
